On November 4th, 1994, Ministry of Post and Communications of China will isue a set of commemoration stamps for the Three Gorges on the Yangtze River. A sixpiece stamp set and an enlarged limited edition stamp.

Xiling Gorge, extends from Fragant Stream in Zigui COunty in the west to Nanjin Pass in Yichang County n the east. It has a total length of 76 km. This gorge is awesome with its dagerous rapids, shoals, reefs, sharp turns and whirlpools. It also consists of several small gorges. Here, some of the peaks half hidden behind drifting mists are like faintly inked traditional chinese paintings. The rugged peaks piercing into the clouds with boisterous waves below present scenes of a richly colored oil painting. The famous Three Gorges Project construction site is on the Xiling Gorge at a distance of about 40 km. from Yichang City.

Yuepingli, Qu Yuans birthplace is a distance of 1.5 km from Zigui County on the northern bank of the Yangtze. It consists of the temple gate, the statue of Qu Yuan, the memorial and grave of Qu Yuan.

On November 4th, 1994, Ministry of Post and Communications of China will isue a set of commemoration stamps for the Three Gorges on the Yangtze River. A sixpiece stamp set and an enlarged limited edition stamp.

Wu Gorge (Wu Xia) begins at the mouth of the Daling River in Wushan County, Sichuan Province in the west and ends at Guandukou in Badong County, Hubei province in the east. It a total length of 40 km. Like a winding corridor of paintings, this gorge displays twelve splendid peaks of the Wushan Mountain Range. As an old poem says: Cruising down Wu Gorge, the Twelve Peaks of the Wushan Mountains become one with your heart.

The Goddess Peak (Wang Xia Feng) stands out from the other peaks on the northern bank of the Yangtze. It is only 15 km. from Wushan County. Seen at a distance it resembles the silhouette of a beautiful young lady, who is said to be Yao Ji, the youngest daughter of the Queen Mother of the Western Heaven, hence the name Goddess Peak.

Qutang Gorge, also called Kui Gorge, extends from the White King Shrine in the west, to the town of Dexishen in the east. It has a total length of eight kilometers. The Qutang Gorge is well known for its grandeur. At this spot in the Yangtze River, the mighty and rapid river suddenly narrows. The Song Dynasty poet, Su Dongpo describes the spectacle as a thousand seas poured into one cup.

Baidicheng (White King Shrine) is on the northern bank of the Yantze River, 7.5 km from Fengjie County. It is surrounded by water on three sides and mountains on one side. It is a solitary town guarding the mountains and rivers at Kuiman, looking particularly elegant.

Description:

The 50th National Day of the Republic of China was on October 10, 1961. To celebrate the golden jubilee, a set of commemorative postage stamps was issued in two denominations. The 0.80 stamp, in vertical type, has the portraits of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and President Chiang Kai`shek as the central subject, thus paying tribute to the founder and the leader of the Republic of China in these 50 years. The central design for 5.00 stamp, in horizontal type, is a flying national flag and a map of the Republic of China with the mainland behind the flag and the island of Taiwan glowing brightly.

The Chinese government resumes the exercise of sovereignty over Macao with effect from 20 December, 1999 and establishes the Macao Special Administrative Region, which ushers in a new era in Macao history.

To celebrate the Macao's return to the motherland, the State Postal BUreau is to issue on December 20, 1999 a set of two commemorative stamps and a souvenir sheet of 1998-18 "Macao's Return to the Motherland". The title of the design is "Macao's Return to the Motherland" with the face value of 800 fen. The sheet measures 140 x 95 mm. The size of the sheet stamp is 60 x 50 mm. Printed in photogravure.

1999 - 18 Macao's Return to Motherland - Commemorative Stamps

The two-piece set of stamps with a total face value of 230 fen, was issued by the State Postal Bureau on December 20, 1999 in commemoration of Macao's return to motherland. Two souvenir sheets, one with the same pattern as that of the cover and a face value of 800 fen, and the other a gold-foiled one with a face value of 50 yuan, were issued together with the set. The stamps are respectively entitled "The Sino-Portugese Joint Declaration" and "The Basic Law of the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China." The Souvenir sheet and the gold-foiled souvenir sheet are both entitled "Macao's return to Motherland".

On December 20, 1999, the People's Republic of China resumed the exercise of sovereignity over Macao, marking an end of Macao's long history of separation from the motherland, and washing away the humiliation that the Chinese people had suffered for over four centuries. This was another big event for the Chinese people after Hong Kong's return. Macao will enhoy greater stability and development in the new century under the guidance of the policy of "one country' two systems."
