EMPEROR HSUAN T’UNG STAMPS COMMEMORATIVE ISSUE
EMPEROR HSUAN T’UNG COMMEMORATIVE ISSUE
After Emperor Kuang Hsu died in 14 November 1908, Henry Pu Yi, son of Prince Chung, which had been picked by Empress Dowager, was enthroned on 22 January 1909 as Emperor and his reign was named HSUAN T’UNG.
On 15 May 1909 after the funeral of Emperor Kuang Hsu earlier in the month, the Statistical Customs Department in Peking ordered the issuing of a set of commemorative stamps to honor the first year of Hsuan T’ung’s reign.
These commemorative stamps were first issued in Shanghai on 8 September 1909 and were on sale until 1 October 1910.
As Emperor Hsuang T’ung is only 4 years old, the ruling and operation of the country was in the hand of Empress Lung Yu, wife of Emperor Kuang Hsu and Prince Chung ; which have been titled “She Cheng Wang” to signify his power in the Imperial government.
The set of 3 stamps was designed and engraved by Mr. Lorenzo J. Hatch and Mr. William A. Grant from the U.S.A. The center design of the stamps is The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests in The Temple of Heaven in Peking and the vignettes is a pair of Dragons; the value; ‘Chinese Emperor Hsuan T’ung First Year’ and the printer’s name ‘Waterlow and Sons Limited, London’.
Sheets contained 100 stamps, ten high by ten wide printed on unwatermarked paper.
This is the second set of commemorative stamps issued for China, the first being the Dowager issue. The stamp designs are carefully illustrated with the orange yellow colour and the 5 claws dragon that represent the Emperor and the Hall of Prayer which only the Emperor could enter. (Notes: No one at the time could use the orange yellow colour and the 5 claws dragon design except for the Emperor)
In October 1911, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen overthrew the Ching Dynasty and establishes the REPUBLIC of CHINA. Emperor Hsuan T’ung was edited, but the Imperial Chinese stamps remain in use until 31 March 1914.
Later in 1914 after the expiration of these stamps for postal use, unsold stamps were put up for auction in London and the explanation to why the large quantities of mint stamps existed today.

Background info
Women's football celebrated its true coming of age in November of 1991 when the Women's World Championship was brought to life on the ambitious initiative of Dr. João Havelange, FIFA President at that time.
The first competition kicked off in the People's Republic of China to large and enthusiastic crowds. With twelve nations competing, it proved to be a resounding success.
In keeping with the true spirit of the celebration, six female referees or assistant referees were appointed among match officials for the first time in FIFA history. Claudia de Vasconcelos of Brazil, the referee for the 3rd-place match, became the first woman to officiate at this level for FIFA.
The American team, led by a dominating forward line dubbed ¡°The Triple-Edged Sword¡± by the Chinese media, tore through the tournament to win the first-ever world championship for women¡¯s football

Background info
Sun Wu, author of "The Art of war of Sunzi", courtesy - named Changqing, was a native of Le An of State Qi (Huimin county, Shandong Prov.) in the later years of Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 B.C.). At Wu Zixu's seventh recommendation, he was received in audience by King He Lu of State Wu for his military theories and was immediately made a general. As he showed up in the conquering wars, Sun Wu quickly proved himself of great strength in military affairs. Due to his remarkable command, State Wu took over the overlord place of State Jin.
"The Art of War of Sunzi" is not only an illustrious martial classics in ancient China, but one of the oldest writings on war art in the world. It consists of 13 chapters. They are: Laying Plan; Waging War; Attack by Stratagem; Tactical Dispositions; Energy; Weak Points and Strong; Manoeuvring; Variation of Tavtics; The Army on the March; Terrain; The Nine Varieties of Ground; The Attack by Fire and The Use of Spies. There are only about 5 thousand more characters, but the intelligence they contain is immeasurable. It presents exquisite discussions on various aspects of antique military theories, nevertheless touching, as one sees, almost all the categories and branches of modern military science. Since its appearance, "The Art of War of Sunzi" has been highly appreciated and resorted to by strategists throughout the history and was honored as "the Greatest Martial Classics". Noticeable in this book are also many dictums and aphorisms of rich understanding that reveals the universal principles of the war, such as: "if you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles"; "attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected"; "to wait at ease while the enemy is toiling and struggling"; "avoid the strong, attack the weak", and so on. All these statements echo with sophisticated philosophy.
Today, the enduring masterpiece of "The Art of War of Sunzi", bearing an age of 25 hundred years, with versions of more than a dozen foreign languages, witnesses its influence everywhere. It passed through boundaries and made fame around the world. Results of researches based upon the book have been applied to other fields beyond military sphere, as to politics, diplomatic affairs, economy and sports, etc.. As further exploration goes on, "The Art of War of Sunzi" will sure have much more to offer to us mankind

Background info
There are over 40 Song-dynasty painted statues of imperial maids in the Goddess Hall of the Jinci Temple at the foot of the Xuanweng Mountain southwest of the city of Taiyuan, Shanxi province. They are in different poses, with various appearances and expressions, full figures and in colourful and elegant dresses. Some are cleaning, some dressing up, and some sing and dancing. These statues reflect people's ordinary life, and represent the realistic style and superb skills of the Song-dynasty artists. The beautiful, vivid, lifelike statues contain the quintessence of sculpture of ancient Chine women. These world-famous masterpieces are among the three superb treasures of the Jinci Temple, the other two being the Nanlao Spring (Never Aging Spring) and the Zhou Cypress.

Background info
China's auto industry started in 1953, when the First Automobile Works (FAW) was set up in Changchun City, Jilin Province. In 1957, the first truck new China made independently rolled out. In December 1964, the BJ212, alight cross-country automobile manufactured by the then Beijing Automobile Factory, was the first of its kind self-designed and developed by China, and put into batch production.
In general, China's auto industry has so far experienced two development stages, and now it has mounted onto the third stage.
The country's auto industry construction period lasted from 1953 to 1978, when the FAW and the Second Automobile Works and a group of auto components factories were built.
From late 1970s to early 1990s, the second development period, China's auto industry grew steadily, with a group of local manufacturers of light-and heavy-duty trucks emerging, and manufacture bases taking shape included: the First Automobile Works and the Second Automobile Works, China Heavy-Duty, South Auto, and those others in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Shenyang.
Since the 1980s, through technology introduction and absorbing high tech and renovation, China's auto industry recorded remarkable progress and entered upon a new phase, The products are mainly medium-sized trucks, including light, heavy-duty, and mini-trucks for commercial, special and, passenger uses. Among the products the proportion of sedans increased rapidly, and product greatly improved The automobile industry has become the pillar industry for the national economy.

Background info
Interchanges are multi-layer flyovers that have been built over the past several decades. With interchanges. Vehicles and pedestrians from all directions can cross each other by their own way without waiting for traffic light.
Interchanges generally fall into two categories, the simple flyovers and complicated interchanges. The former can only ensure the cross of vehicle at both the upper and lower layers, while the latter can guarantee the cross of vehicles at various layers and thus need more slip roads and occupy more land.
Interchanges have been developing rapidly over the past several decades since they can prevent vehicles from reducing speed and starting again at crossings and bring about considerable social-economic gains. China started to vigorously develop interchanges in mid-1970s. The first interchange in Beijing is the Fuxingmen Interchange which was built in 1974. Today, there are several hundreds of interchanges along the second, third and fourth ring roads of the city. In terms of architectural structure, the interchanges, with two to four layers, include simply flyovers and those in the shape of cloverleaf and butterfly, with H-and Y-type and single-column bridge piers.
At present, the largest interchange in China is the Siyuan Interchange in Beijing. It is a four-layer large interchange composed of 26 bridges, with the span between the single-column bridge piers being the largest in interchanges of the country. The bridges of the Siyuan Interchange, which covers 400,000 square meters of land, have a total length of 2.8 kilometers and a total area of 40,000 square meters.

China is the first country in the world which has discovered, planted and made use of the tea. Legend has it that Shen Nong, a legendary ruler who introduced agriculture and medicine, was poisoned by 72 kinds of poisonous herbs in one day when he was tasting hundreds of herbs, but was cured by tea. "Literary Expositor", and ancient book written 350 BC also mentioned tea and its planting. China is internationally acknowledged as having nearly 4,000 years of history of planting tea.
Tea was originally planted in Sichuan. After the Qin Empire conquered the State of Shu, tea was extensively planted else-where. In the Qin and Han dynasties, people used tea as medicine, and later as a drink to clear away heat and toxic material. Hua Tuo of the Three Kingdoms said in his "On Food" that drinking bitter tea was beneficial to health. At present, commodity tea is generally divided into six kinds: green tea, such as Dragon Well, Biluochun, Zhenmei, Zhucha and Huangshan Maofeng; yellow tea, which is covered tightly and turns yellow in the course of processing, such as Junshan Yinzhen and Mengding Huangya; black tea, which turns black after being piled, such as Hubei Laoqingcha and Hunan Black Tea; white tea, which is in thin pieces and not fried, such as Baihao Yinzhen and Gongmei; Qingcha tea, which is a semi-fermented tea, and has the mellow taste of black tea and fragrance of green tea, such as Wuyiyan Tea and Wulong Tea; black tea, a fully-fermented tea, such as Qimen Black Tea. It is estimated that half of the world's population drink tea. The etiquette of drinking tea has been introduced to Japan where it integrated the preaching of Zen and became the Tea Ceremony involving religion, art , moral, philosophy, personal cultivation and social etiquette.
According to the statistics, China's tea output has increased from 41,000 tons in 1949 to 590,000 tons in 1996. China Ranked third in the world in terms of output in 1949, and has ranked second since 1978.
